Selma man dies in early Tuesday morning wreck
Published Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Family members are still trying to make sense of a wreck that caused their loved one’s death early Tuesday morning.
Alabama State Troopers responded to a one-vehicle wreck at 1:15 a.m. The wreck occurred on County Road 30, five miles east of Sardis.
“The preliminary report indicates that the vehicle left the roadway,” Department of Public safety Information Specialist Dorris Teague said. “Once the 1997 Ford Crown Victoria left the road it crashed into a tree. The driver of the vehicle was ejected from the vehicle.”
Selma resident Billy Travis Poynor Jr., 31, died in the wreck from the injuries he sustained. Two passengers in the vehicle — Robert Bodiford, 18, and Tony Coyle, 29 — also suffered injuries and were taken to Baptist South Montgomery. Troopers did not know the extent of their injuries.
“The preliminary report does not indicate how severe their injuries are,” Teague said. “That information will be available in the completed wreck report.”
Troopers said that at least two of the passengers were not wearing a seat belt at the time of wreck.
“The report does not reflect if [Bodiford] was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident,” Virginia Jackson, Alabama State Troopers, said. “It does state that [Poynor and Coyle] were not wearing their seat belts.”
The state troopers’ crash information release form noted the airbags did deploy for Bodiford and Poynor.
Family members remembered Poynor as their grieving process began Tuesday.
“Billy was a loving father and devoted husband,” said Stephanie Tarver, Poynor’s aunt. “He was a mild and humble-hearted, irreplaceable young man that will be missed by all. Although this is a devastating time for everyone, we, the family, find comfort in God’s promise found at John 5:28,29 and also at Revelation 21:4,5.”
Authorities said they did not have a cause of accident yet, but the wreck is being investigated by the Alabama State Troopers.

My prayers are with the Poynor family and with the other two passengers and their families. Losing a loved one, especially a young one, is never easy. It's a very hard road to go down. God Bless them all.

To the Poynor family, my prayers are with you. I found solice in the scripture, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord".
May the Holy Spirit surround you with love, affection and support.

Thanks to everyone for all the prayers. Tony is my fiance. Bubba(Billy) was my stepbrother for many years. I had just met Robert not long before this happened. This story has several inaccuate statements. First off, Bubba was driving. Tony was a passenger in the front seat and Robert was in the backseat. Secondly, none of them were wearing seatbelts. They were gone from the house less than 10 minutes when the accident occured. I was the one that called 911. Unfortunately the ambulance was sent from Camden and NOT Selma. They called me 3-4 times trying to figure out how to get from Hwy 41 in Camden to County Road 30 in Sardis. It was very frustrating.
Again, I thank everyone for the prayers.
