What is this?
Color, brushes, art
Published Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Children furrowed their brows as they planned their next brush stroke and color choice.
A group of aspiring artists filled the children’s room at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library Wednesday morning. Ann Minter-High hosted and helped the young artists during the watercolors program.
“First I talked about what art is and different aspects to include,” Minter-High said. “Since the Fourth of July just occurred, I thought it would be great to have a pieces that focused on the American flag. I also created a still life subject.”
The still life subject was soon dismantled for children who wanted a closer look at the vegetables and fruit.
Minter-High brought along a watermelon and an example of her rendering of the fruit.
Several of the children were not first-time painters, but still enjoyed the day’s activity.
“I have fun making art,” Lena Glace, 15, said. “I’m home schooled so I have more free time for art, but I don’t get to do it everyday. I enjoy it when I can. I like painting at the library because it is a nice change of scenery.”
Glace, who was a little older than most of the other artists, helped out some of the younger children.
Jane Anne Stewart, 11, didn’t need any help with creativity.
“I get to paint all the time at school,” she said. “I paint with Mrs. Cam Walker at Morgan and it is really fun to make pretty pictures.”
The library has held programs throughout the summer that encourage kids artistically and to “Read and Recycle.”
The summer for the library is winding down and officially ends July 23, but there are six more programs to attend.
• Thursday, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., “Just for Fun”
• Friday, 10 - 10:45 p.m., “Crazy Painting Fun”
• Monday, 10 a.m. - noon, “Open House Art”
• Tuesday, 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., “Just for Fun Finale”
“Cinderella” is the last puppet show on Wednesday at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The summer ends with music from Jim Aycock, July 23, from 10 a.m. until 10:45.
