Longtime assault suspect surrenders
Published Friday, July 10, 2009
A Minter man accused in a shooting in December 2008 has turned himself in to Dallas County deputies.
Anthony Rivers, 44, reported to probation and parole officers Thursday afternoon. Those officers handed Rivers over the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
“We are not sure as of now why he turned himself in,” Dallas County Chief Deputy Randy Pugh said. “Investigators have not had the opportunity to interview him, but we should be questioning him shortly.”
Rivers allegedly shot a man in the leg and buttocks Dec. 2, 2208 in Minter.
“It is believed he shot the victim in the leg and buttocks,” Dallas County Sheriff’s Investigator John Hatfield said. “Witnesses reported Mr. Rivers held the gun to the victim’s head, but a family member talked him out of shooting him.”
The victim was taken to a hospital where he underwent two surgeries.
Rivers recently spent 12 years in jail for aggravated assault, according to authorities.
He was released on probation more than two years ago, but the Alabama State Police have a warrant for Rivers for a parole violation.
Rivers was featured in the Feb. 8 issue of The Selma Times-Journal as part of the Selma and Dallas County’s most wanted list.
Rivers now sits in the Dallas County Jail under no bond. He faces a class-b felony. However due to the Code of Alabama habitual felony offenders laws his class-b felony charge could very well be changed to class-a felony, if he is convicted.
