Shooting leads to proposed Ward 8 meeting
Published Monday, July 6, 2009
The latest violent death in Selma has Selma city officials seeking a meeting with club owners.
Daron Snowden, 44, of Selma was shot multiple times early Saturday morning outside Clyde’s Tornado Lounge.
The incident was originally reported as attempted murder, but the death of the victim later in the day saw the charges upgraded to murder.
The shooting occurred in Ward 8. Councilman Corey Bowie, who represents the ward, met with Mayor George Evans late Monday afternoon to discuss how to stop the violence.
“We are going to have a meeting with the club owners in the ward next Monday,” Bowie said. “We have to address some concerns.”
Snowden and another man were sitting in a vehicle outside the club when the shooting occurred.
Bowie said too much loitering goes on outside clubs in his ward.
“I want to be fair and balanced with club owners,” Bowie said. “It will take a collaborative effort between the city and the club owners to negate some of these problems.”
Selma Police spokesman Lt. David Evans said a person approached the vehicle in which Snowden and other person sat and began firing shots at Snowden, who was the passenger.
Authorities did not say how many times Snowden was struck, but officers recovered six spent shell casings at the scene.
“The driver of the vehicle drove from the scene directly to Vaughan Medical Center,” Evans said. “The driver was not injured in the shooting. At some point the victim was flown by helicopter to another treatment facility.”
Snowden died at the second hospital.
Officers do not know the motive of the shooting.
“Officers have identified a suspect at this time,” Evans said. “We are confident that an arrest will take place shortly.”
Once the suspect is arrested, he or she will be charged with murder. Under the Code of Alabama, murder is a class-a felony. If the suspect is convicted, then that person could face imprisonment up to life or the death penalty and to pay a fine up to $60,000.
Although officers have a suspect identified, they still ask for anyone with information to contact them.
You can call the police department at 874-6611 or the Secret Witness Line at 874-2190 or Crime Stoppers at 877-3530. Crime Stoppers pays up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

I would like to see how many times the Police have been called to this club for either a shooting, violent fight or other altercations in the last 3 or 4 years? But their alcohol license still gets re-newed and the doors still stay open right in the heart of downtown.

Here's one of the reasons why people leave Selma - crime. Although majority of the violent crimes occur in the same areas that commonly have problems and with people who hang out with the wrong crowd.
It's not just the economy that turn people away from Selma and the fact that the city council wanted to decrease the salaries of the SPD is not helping much at all either.

cindidanley, I also believe if you have children, you should have the means to feed them, but sterilization after one child, come-on. There are lots of young people who have a child out-of-wedlock, while teenagers, grow up, and marry, have other children, and do well in life, eventhough they received assistance with their first child. I wish I had the ans. to the crime problem, but don't believe sterilization after one child is that ans. Also, if we punish the females, what about all of the men who think they are doing something by "spreading their seeds." I believe that putting prayer back in the schools, not giving the tax money to so many CAUSES, will help. When people were made to support themselves, before free lunches, welfare, etc. the country didn't have near as many problems, but there is no way to teach SELF RESPECT, and these thugs have none of that. They talk about being disrespected, but don't seem to know what respect is.

Whodat,
Its inconsiderate people like you that make unintelligent comments like that. What civilized human being would think its ok for someone to be murdered? This was my Cousin and our family is hurting right now! He has a beautiful, supportive, loving family who will miss him dearly! I guess you wouldn’t care because it hasn't happened to you. This is why we never come together as a race, because allot of people (not all) have such hatred in there hearts. I'll pray for you... That whatever has hurt you in life that God gives you peace in your heart.
PS. (Let’s try to be more positive when making comments, because the family may read them… Its a rough time right now).
Thank You

People careful squirk, when you start pulling the veil off of the real problems in Selma and that leading to the TRUTH.....people get antsy and will start dealing those race cars and calling you a racist. I am 100% in board with what you are saying. When this community faces it,
accepts it and deals with it....then Selma will achieve progress, less crime and a prosperous community. It's called called being in a STATE OF DENIAL.

You know this is nothing but a trick of the enemy (the devil) to cause confusion and discord. But, I know that the devil is a liar and that we have the VICTORY; inspite of how it looks or feels. God is still good and He is worthy to be praised!!!

And God also gives us the ability to make choices that border on right and wrong. Some of us choose to do good and make a positive difference, while others choose to live a delusional naive existence that is filled with ignorant, belligerent behaviour filled with excuses of irresponsibilty.

cindidanley: do you really think before you speak? I don't like using the term, but that sounds "stupid". Just say don't have them if you can't afford them and leave it at that.

cindidanley: It's not freedom of speech I was commenting on. But, now that you bring it up, I will use my freedom of speech to let you know your comment short of thinking through. I guess you think that because you have 1 child. I won't even check back for a comment - I know who you are and I also know you think you are always right. No need to continue.

I am offended by these comments....the strilization issue can fall on both sides...
look at the poligomist cult that was busted in texas all were receicving government assistance, and all had too many children....
It is not just the black community abusing the system, all are...but hey when your views are biased that is all you see..
I pray that the Lord allows your family to remain perfect so that ills of the world don't come knocking on your door!
get off your high horse and respect a life....that is someones son, brother, uncle, nephew, and father....

People ask me, why do you talk about race everyday. I just say, "hey, I'm just joining the crowd around here". All I hear is oppression talk, 1965 talk, civil rights talk, talk talk talk talk. SO, I am joining this movement to celebrate my beliefs, my advocacy of past, heritage, freedoms, rights, what I don't have and why I should be given it, why I am being fleeced by this government, why my children fall to quotas and affirmative action, how this administration is advocating rights for Illegal Immigrants yet United States citizens living right here don't even have healthcare, how I can forward and progress my "folk" and why I don't care about giving people anything because they don't care enough about earning it themselves. Need to hear more?

RACE WAR!! RACE WAR!!!
Here we go again with this race mess. I just left one blog talking about race and here we go again.
tiredofthistown slavery is over and we know this, talk to us black folks like we are in the 21st century ok. " Now you have your freedom and don't know how to act!!! Come on now you are talking like your good ancestors gave us freedom. It's a fight everyday for freedom, freedom to keep from harming people like you with that kind of atitude towards black folks. With that atitude towards us you will keep us in prisons.
eyeonyou
I feel you I agree "why I don't care about giving people anything because they don't care enough about earning it themselves." I believe that everybody should earn their way if they are able. Lazy is no excuse, and that is for any race.

It's a war of disbanding the ignorance, double standards and excuses and instilling THE TRUTH. When you give and give and give and give and get nothing back but finger pointing, fault, and are pigeon wholed as to everything evil in this city and country....it get REAL OLD. It gets so old that you start resenting...and that's not good.
I just see so many here that want to advacote for one side and one community ONLY. That's why I have taken on this attitude of taking care of myself. If these others aren't willing to make sacrifices to help themselves, then why in the hell should I. It's a game that has been going on for soo many years...and I'm not playing it anymore. I don't need to make excuses or look at others for my downfalls. I have myself to blame....and ONLY myself.

Why was the STJ so touchy about the cencus story? It would have been good for the "100 comment " award of the week. First time I've ever seen all the comments pulled from a story after the comments had started. What ever happened to the publc input we were hoping to obtain with this online offering of the STJ?

this whole problem is just stupid because they way the news press has it is strange. if someone was in the car when he got shot how come he didint get shot or why didnt he drive off when the first shot was fired. me and him lived in the same neighborhood we would joke all the time. he wasnt the type of person to start mess he was only doing his job and it wasnt a reason to get shot and killed over but some are just ignorant and have no sense so if you ask me i think it all was a set up. now there's strange activity in the neighborhood and around the house he stayed in.
