Feel free to celebrate, but put safety first

Published Thursday, July 2, 2009

The long weekend has begun. Many people will travel the roads to long destinations or just down the road to a favorite relative's or friend's house.

Holidays are treacherous on the highways because people forget to buckle up or drive too fast or are intoxicated and get behind the wheel of a car.

The point is: Be safe.

If you drive, make sure you buckle up and pay attention to those around you. Defensive driving is safe driving.

Obey the speed limits. They are there for a reason. Chances are you'll get there in plenty of time to enjoy some apple pie and ice cream if you obey the law.

And, if you decide to drink a few beers or mixed drinks, hand your keys over to someone who imbibes only in sodas or water.

It's a long weekend. A time for celebration.

Let's make sure everyone travels the roads safely.
