New Shady Grove Baptist Church in Sardis had an unwelcome visitor Tuesday night.

The Rev. Bert Scott noticed a broken window Wednesday morning. He reported the burglary, and by Wednesday afternoon deputies had George Edwin Griffin Jr., 42, in custody as a suspect for burglary third degree.

“Deputy Calvin Edwards went out to the scene,” Investigator Mike Granthum said. “He began to canvass the area.”

The investigation by Edwards and Sgt. Burt Allison led them to a witness, who wished to remain nameless.

“The informant told [Edwards and Allison] they saw Griffin last night with a severe laceration to an arm, and he was bleeding profusely,” Granthum said.

Allison went to Griffin’s home to question him about the injury to his left wrist.

The suspect opened the door and talked to him.

“Through an interview, Sgt. Allison found out Griffin stole a television from the church,” Granthum said. “The suspect said he has already sold the television.”

Deputies placed Griffin in the Dallas County Jail under a $2,500 bond and a probation hold.

Griffin was currently on probation for a 2006 conviction of burglary third degree.

Authorities said the suspect has convictions for four burglaries and two charges of breaking and entering of a vehicle that range from 1993-2006.

Griffin faces a Class C felony charge. Under Alabama law conviction of any Class C felony can result in a prison sentence from one year and a day to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $15,000.

Question: Was the person who bought the TV from him arrested for receiving stolen property? This man has had a regular job of stealing since 1993. Sardis is small that people have to come to Selma to shop. I am pretty sure that everyone knows everyone else. How could the person not have known that the TV was stolen, if he had possession of it and he is a known thief? He has been arrested before (at least 6 times) so I am sure they knew. We enable when we buy "hot" items.

Sharon I was wondering the same thing myself. I have never to my knowledge bought anything that has been stolen. Most everything I buy comes straight from the store. If I buy anything from anyone its usually someone I know and have known them for sometime.
I wonder if it was a flat screen TV or one of the older TV's?

He did know. 100% he knew the TV was stolen. We have a case of 2 people that could care less about the church's property. When you steal from a church, you are the scum of the earth. There's a special place for you Mr. Griffin. Hope you like heat.

That's sad! Why can't these people find jobs or go back to school and get a trade or degree? Stealing from the church is just sickening!

Now I don't know why ya'll trippin.....look at the man...he appears to have a substance abuse problem( to put it nicely)...so why you think he'll give a second thought to where his way to get a quick buck will come from. Come on....

Newswatcher, that is no excuse!

I think the punishment should go with the crimes committed,

if you steal take a hand, of you do it again take the other hand....
Take away the temporary insanity, so the criminals can't plead insane.. well then again, if the punishment fit the crime, then they would HAVE to be INSANE.. huh?
going to jail is apparently NOT helping, once they get out, they do it again and again..

WAKE UP PEOPLE, start voting to put the right judges in place, that will do something!!
Instead of the prisons having the pleasures of life, then make them clean up the highways, you know CHAIN GANG!!!!

When I go to work everyday and put my eight hours in, I can't watch cable tv, or exercise in a gym, I have to WORK!!!
And I THANK GOD Everyday, that I do have a job, and I can provide my family with an honest living!!

Newswatcher....what you been smoking? I guess he should get a pass because he might "allegedly" have a drug problem? There a great excuse to steal from a church right there, folks!!! He looks "to me" like he might need a JOB.

Whoaaaa Bama Fan & eyeonyou..I'm not making excuses for the man...what I'm saying is the man has a problem.....and he'll get the money for it any way he can...he'll steal from his own mother if his fix is really hitting him. These people have no boundaries.....no way am I taking up for them...I work eight hours a day too and don't want my things bothered either.

I just wish I only had to work an eight hour day. Can a normal person provide for a family on just eight hours a day? It sounds like many of you must have tricked your wives into getting a job, and making it sound like eight hours a day, five days a week is a major sacrifice. Can you get the wife to cut the grass, wash the dishes,do the clothes, and cook the meals because your too tired after working forty hours a week? I won't tell them that they are getting the short end of the stick if you'll let me know if they have a sister that is that well trained. popdukes12

popdukes12
I am a wife who works 40 hours a week at my job, I wake every morning @ 4:30am, I am @ work every morning @ 6:15am five days a week. I go in to work this early, so that i can get off @ 3:00 every afternoon, so that I can be home when our 13 year old son gets home from school.
We also have a 20 year old son that is a sophomore in college.
I cook every day. I don't go to bed with dirty clothes in the hamper nor dirty dishes in the sink or dishwasher, even when we have ball games.
I help my husband with "his" chores as well, I am not above taking out the trash even!!
I believe in working together to make good things happen, which includes my marriage and my ability to be a good mother, ( my husband tells me I am a good mother, to me that is one of the best compliments a husband can give his wife).
Oh yeah, and we have two dogs to take care of....
No Sir, I don't consider myself well trained...
I love my husband and kids very much, and other than the Lord, they are the most important thngs in my life!!
And yes Sir, if you are providing the best you can provide for your family, in my eyes you are as normal as anyone can be, and you should be very proud of yourself!!
