Appropriation will help complete Craig Field project
Published Thursday, February 12, 2009
The Craig Field Airport and Industrial Complex got some help Thursday finishing the last leg of a perimeter fencing project.
U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced the Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration awarded $126,211 to the Craig Field Airport.
Craig Field Executive Director Menzo Driskell said the project, which cost nearly $500,000, is almost complete.
“Sen. Shelby came through for us as far as securing those funds,” Driskell said. “We had a shortfall, and the airport authority had to come up with more funds.”
Five miles of fencing runs around the complex, standing eight feet high. The project is scheduled for completion at the beginning of March.
“Maintaining the infrastructure at our local airports is critical to ensuring the safety of those traveling to and from Alabama,” said Shelby. “Perimeter fencing is needed at the Craig Field Airport to prevent unauthorized access to the runway. The airport will use this funding to install perimeter fencing and reduce the potential for accidents to occur.”
