Charity Ball set for Feb. 17
Published Tuesday, February 10, 2009
Black ties, gowns, music and tango lessons — it’s an interesting, and hopefully effective, way to help a charity.
The first ever Mayor’s Charity Ball on Tuesday, Feb. 17 has all the makings of a fun night with the intent of raising money for the Dallas County disaster Relief Fund.
The American Red Cross of the Black Belt is coordinating the event as part of the “Selma Someplace Special” Initiative.
American Red Cross Executive Director Jakki Caldwell-Phillips said the ball is just one way to prove just how special the city is.
“This is a bridge to bring unity and harmony,” Caldwell-Phillips said. “This has been in the planning stages for a year or so.”
The ball is set for 7 p.m. at the former Goody’s store in the Selma Mall. It is the first of planned quarterly events as part of the initiative.
Mayors from cities in Dallas, Perry and Wilcox counties received invitations to take part in the event, Caldwell-Phillips said.
Doris Truax, a co-hostess for the night, will give tango lessons to men as well as provide commentary. She said she was honored for the invitation to participate in such a worthy cause.
“Unity is very important to me,” Truax said. “I’m always for bringing everybody together.”
People can buy tickets for $50 for singles and $75 for couples. Call the Red Cross at 874-4641 to buy tickets or make donations.

It is so good to see some form of progress toward another level in Selma. Many wishes for success.

I think it's a great idea and it sounds like a lot of fun. I remember when we had dances in one of the old buildings on Water Avenue the evening of Market Day. I know, I'm telling my age but everyone looked forward to it and had a good time.
