Warriors fall to 0-2 in rout

Published Friday, August 28, 2009

SELMA — Central Christian Academy brought eight-man football to Selma on Thursday night. Victory Academy, however, took the victory back to Columbus, Miss.

Senior quarterback Parker Eaves threw for three touchdowns and junior running back Landon Ellis scored on a 64-yard kick off return and a 57-yard scamper to give the Columbus team a 62-6 victory.

CCA coach Darrell Walker said he was pleased his team had gained more yards on the ground after last week’s season-opening 48-8 loss to North River.

“I felt we had a pretty good running game tonight,” he said after his team gained 105 yards in the last three quarters. “It’s just so new to us that we’ll just have to keep working. We’re just not used to the situations on the field.”

Central Christian discontinued its football team after two games into the 2007 season, and the school did not field a squad last season.

Victory put the game away in the first quarter, taking a 23-0 lead after running an interception inside the CCA 5, blocking a punt for a touchback and taking over on downs inside the Warriors’ 5.

The Columbus team scored on its first possession, driving 68 yards in six plays, capped off by Daylan Hairston’s 34-yard sweep around the right side with 8:38 left in the first quarter.

Eaves’ PAT pass to Ellis put Victory up 8-0.

CCA’s first possession ended in an interception by Ryan Coleman, who returned the miscue 39 yards to the Warriors’ 4. Ben Williams ran the final yards for the Eagles’ TD and the 14-0 lead.

Then the CCA punt from its own 18 was blocked by Paul Blair and CCA recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

C.J. Bell’s 4-yard run at 2:13 ended first-quarter scoring.

Down 36-0 in the second quarter, CCA scored its only points when senior quarterback Pierre Coleman fought his way around left end for eight yards and the TD at 4:34.

Victory Academy, however, responded with Ellis’ 57-yard kickoff return for a touchdown 16 seconds later.

CCA (0-2) goes to Bessemer next week to play Flint Hill.
