Wallace adds boatload

For Coach April Harper, the time has come to put away the ink pen and pull out the knee pads.

Harper, who is the volleyball and women’s basketball coach at Wallace Community College Selma, announced her final round of signees Thursday.

The announcement just in time for the Lady Patriots’ season-opening volleyball match at 5 p.m. Aug. 28 at home against Jefferson Davis.

Among the final six signees are two Meadowview Christian School volleyball players — Kaylene Darrion and Jessica Burton.

“We’re in Selma, and we try to recruit from the community,” Harper said. “There is a lot of talent in the local schools, and we just have to find it.”

Darrion was captain for three years at Meadowview, playing for five years. She was the team’s MVP in her junior and senior years, and she was voted to the all-tournament team.

Burton was a co-captain at Meadowview in her senior year, when she was voted Best All-Around.

Other volleyball signees include Genevieve McNeary of Memphis, Tenn., and LaTeisha Rone of Cleveland, Texas. In basketball, Harper signed Nicole M. Brooks of Barbour County and Jasmine Miller of Robert E. Lee of Montgomery.

McNeary played for White Station four years, serving as captain her senior year. She played volleyball since the sixth grade, also competing for Delta Force Memphis in club volleyball. She was on the city championship team for four years and was the 2008 Most Valuable Player in the city championship.

Rone played for six years, on the varsity for four years. She was a co-captain her freshman year. She later moved to Phenix City and played there a year at Central High School.

Miller averaged 10 points per game playing basketball for Lee in Montgomery. Brooks averaged 11.5 points per game, earning honorable mention all-state and all-tournament. She also was team MVP as a senior and finished seventh academically in her graduating class.
