Leashore will get manual recount
Published Friday, September 5, 2008
Selma City Councilman Johnnie Leashore will get his recount.
The recount will begin 1 p.m. Monday at City Hall in the council chambers.
“I have a procedure,” said Jimmy Nunn, the city’s attorney, as he explained the process, which will include machine and hand tallies.
Leashore did not return telephone calls Friday. His attorney and friend, Collins Pettaway, confirmed Leashore had agreed to the recount.
Leashore lost the race to B.L. Tucker, a former councilman, by eight votes for the Ward 6 position on the council.
Monday’s recount will not change the certified results. Tucker will take office in November, said Nunn.
But the recount, especially if the numbers should change in Leashore’s favor or if a difference should show up between the machine and hand tallies, will lay the foundation for an election challenge, the attorney said.
Challenges to elections are filed in circuit court. Generally, those challenges take a year or more to reach a conclusion.
Leashore petitioned the city for a recount Thursday afternoon. During a council work session on Thursday, he explained his supporters had urged him to take the action.
Leashore had asked for a manual count.
However, state law does not allow for a manual count of ballots when voting machines are used.
Leashore paid $1,150 for the recount by noon Friday. He paid $1,000 for representatives from Electronic Systems & Software to bring a machine and oversee the recount and $50 each for polling officials to participate in the recount, Nunn said.

That 1,150 would have been better spent repaying the money he owes the city via the Selma Water Works.

Leo71, I agree. He is still trying to by-pass the system and do it his way. WHO would do the re-count??? And like Cecil Williamson, which one would count, the machine count, or the hand count???

I guess the hand count is supposed to "confirm" or possibly find error in the machine count, nowhining.I've heard that these machines are pretty accurate so--for our sake-- I hope that this is an exercise in futility for Mr.Leashore and company.I also think that he's doing this to muddy the waters and cast a cloud of doubt over B.L. Tucker's victory. If I were him I wouldn't get too confortable until he(Leashore) has nowhere else to go with this.

It's really funny that Leashore praised these machines as being tamper free and 100% accurate before the election, but now he wants a hand count because he was short on votes to win. This is about par for the course for Leashore. It pretty much sums up his time as a council person for the last 4 years. It was good for the citizens, but now it's not good enough for him. Go get back to your real job Johnny boy.....you have stolen enough money and wasted enough taxpayers time sitting up there rubberstamping Perkins and proposing lost causes. Ignorance is Bliss.

It sure is.I live in ward six,and he's done very little to improve the conditions in it.Drugs, loitering, and burglaries are rampant... my car was broken into twice in my own driveway! I'm very disappointed that he got as many votes as he did. I can guarantee you many of those voters didn't attend many council meetings,or read the state examiner's report to see how much he cares about his beloved constituency.
