Artist Nico Giampietro, standing rear right, delivered a new butterfly to Principal Tanya Miles, rear left, and students at Bruce Craig Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon. The students painted a butterfly that was stolen Oct 9. Students pictured seated are from left, Walter Knox, Keshawn Arrington , De'Andre Breedlove, Cameron Walton, and Shaniya England. Standing from left are, Jer'Markiaus Hall, A'lecia McConico, Daijah Jones, Anantha Rutledge, and Taylor McCall.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for one of the people accused of stealing a butterfly last month.

Porsha Nix, 20, failed to appear for an arraignment hearing in Judge Bob Armstrong’s courtroom, according to District Attorney Michael Jackson.

Selma police arrested Nix and 20-year-old Jennifer Moore on Oct. 15 and charged them with felony second-degree theft of property. They are accused of taking a butterfly painted by students in a Bruce Craig Elementary art class.

Moore lives at 430 Lauderdale Ave., across the street from the stolen butterfly. She told police she wanted it and admitted to stealing it with Nix.

Jackson said a preliminary hearing for Nix and Moore has been set for Dec. 4.

The butterfly was one of more than 40 similar pieces of art created by local artists and organizations. The butterflies are valued at $1,500 each and were part of a project by the Dallas County Arts Alliance to promote tourism in the area.

A grand unveiling of the butterflies was held Oct. 9 in conjunction with Market Day, Tale Tellin’ and the Central Alabama Fair weekend.

Robert Gordon of Gordon’s Antiques repaired the butterfly and returned it to the school weeks after the theft.

Steve Grossman, president of the Dallas County Arts Alliance, and local artist Nico Giampietro delivered a new butterfly to the students at Craig Elementary on Wednesday.

Something negative turned into something positive! Maybe people now can respect the public property!

This thug failed to appear in court??? Even after the Police said they would cut the thugs a break. This is why she should be jailed. If she will steal from kids...then no telling what she is capable of. She should be taught a very valuable lesson. This should also be a great example to these innocent children on what NOT to do in life.

looks like she has that attitude ( I don't care) so sad, this is not setting a good example for our young children.

Thanks to Mr. Gordon FOR FIXING THE BUTTERFLY, BUT THE PAPER FAILED TO ADD THAT MOORE PAID FOR THE FIXING OF THE BUTTERFLY. MOORE SHOWED UP AT COURT, SO SHE IS SHOWING THAT SHE IS TRYING TO MAKE IT RIGHT. AS FAR A NIX GOES THAT WAS A VERY STUPID MOVE.

selmablander, if you look up the word thug in the dictionary,it means a cruel or vicious ruffian, a ROBBER,or a murderer. Where the first and last are a bit extreme, I do believe that robber does fit. So in my opinion, thug is a proper term for this criminal. When people do not act civilized, they should not be addressed like they are. An eye for an eye, so to speak. I hope both are ashamed of themselves and have learned the lesson that if you want something, you should work to get it and not go steal from innocent people to get it. That is just pathetic!!!

Sorry, but she should not receive gratification for something that she should not have been done in this first place. I applaud her efforts to correct her fault, but I do not applaud her for taking a hand in this crime. We do not thank or acknowledge other criminals after they have served their time in jail/prison; neither should we acknowledge this sentence of justice either.

"Selmablander". This girl is 100% thug because of the absolute thougtless act of what she did. Why in the he^%$ would she go and destroy the butterfly that these school children worked so hard to paint and display? WHY? Because she could?!?! Yeah...and because she is a thug. She should be over at the school putting in about 100+ community hours...then sitting in jail when not doing that. She should be made to go apologize in front of the WHOLE SCHOOL. You want to ask me why she is a thug again? If it were something of value taken out of YOUR yard and destroyed...wonder what you would call her? Pathetic loser.

I just asked a simple question no reason to blow up about it .

Posted by mccrary36703 (anonymous) on November 20, 2008 at 3:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If she was a white girl would she be consider a thug?

Posted by eyeonyou (anonymous) on November 20, 2008 at 3:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah...a simple question with a LOT of idiocracy behind it. There is a reason to blow up about it. I am sick of these low life thugs running this city into the ground. Maybe you don't mind it, but I do. What else would you call this person? A victim of society? Until WE "The Citizens" start demanding these people get the he&^% out of our city or put in jail for these acts, the city is doomed.

Okay, I think the question from mccrary36703 is ridiculous and a large part of the problem Selma is faced with today. Do you think if she was white we would say "Oh, bless her heart, she is a good girl with a troubled heart?" No, this is one of those things where race should never even be a thought. A thug is a thug, it is not reserved for black people. It is reserved for low life criminals of all races and gender. The fact that some people always want to throw out the race card sickens me. I will also say this on the matter, people like us who voice our opinion about different matters are often told that we hate Selma and should move, but in all actuality, these thugs are the ones who hate Selma, that is why they help destroy it.

Thank You for that answer, you have answer my question very well.

Posted by selmablander (anonymous) on November 20, 2008 at 3:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I dont understand how this can even be turned into a race issue. Black & white females were both in this.Everything isnt always about race. Thats what is wrong with the world today.

I was trying to help out selmablander, because that's all he or she really wanted to know, I am sure. See I like to keep it real. I don't care how ridiculous the question is. I want everybody to know the real deal.

getitreal, you are absolutely right. McCrary, Race has no merit here.
