The Selma City Council begins work
Published Sunday, November 16, 2008
On Monday, the Selma City Council will meet for an orientation at the St. James Hotel. This meeting is open to the public. And many should attend.
The newly elected members of the city council have undergone an immersion in governance. Many attended a meeting in Montgomery the day before they were sworn into office to learn about the "dos and don'ts" of conducting public business.
Many have attended multiple seminars in Orlando, Fla. last week to meet other similarly elected officials from the nation at the National League of Cities conference.
Now, the council will come home to join together and talk about how best to conduct city business.
City Council President Geraldine Allen, who has not been publicly available because she was hospitalized, has called this meeting to bring council members together and give order to what has been — at least for several years — a fractured council.
We also have taken notice that the public is invited to observe this session. This is a good sign, meaning that at least the president of the city council is open to public scrutiny of the city's business.
We also look forward to the first full meeting of the city council as the men and women elected to set policy for the city begin working with Mayor George Evans for a better Selma.

Not that we needed one--we are their employers-- the invitation to observe our largely new council and mayor in action has been extended. It's imperative-- if we truly want to see positive change in Selma-- that the citizens make time to attend these meetings.

I'D BE WILLING TO BET BENNIE RUTH WON'T BE AT THE WORK SESSION. REMEMBER, SHE ALREADY KNOWS IT ALL AND PROBABLY BELIEVES THE MEETING IS ABOUT HER DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR. POPDUKES12

Knowing Mrs. Crenshaw I imagine that she is doing everything that she can to help improve the quality of life for the people in her district and in Selma. Her personality might be a little strong for you but she must be doing something right, she keeps getting elected. And as to her being disruptive, does she get things done? At the end of the day that is what counts. Everyone can't be quiet and just let things happen. Remember the meek may inherit the earth but they won't keep it. I will tell you this, if she is half as caring and concerned about the people in her area as she was for her students at Westside, then they are very lucky people. BTW typing in all caps signals excitement and yelling. Is this really a subject that requires yelling to get your point across? Especially when you are trying to call attention to the fact that someone else might not be following Robert's Rules of Order.
