No bond for Aaron on capital murder charge

Published Thursday, November 6, 2008

A man charge with capital murder in the shooting death of a Selma woman will not have bond on that charge.

Thaddeus Aaron received a no bond on his capital murder charge Thursday in Dallas County District Court. He received a $1 million bond on the first-degree assault charge connected with the shooting.

The shooting occurred Oct. 20. Marvin Maul called the Selma Police Department to report a black Honda Accord drove past his sister’s house at 1709 Voeglin Ave., someone fired a weapon from the vehicle and wounded Maul in the left arm and his sister, Helen Roper, was shot in the right leg.

Roper died the next day from her injuries.

Authorities have said they talked to Aaron and he told them he was the passenger in the car driven by Joy Jones. In an affidavit filed with the District Court, Detective Fred Walker of the Selma Police Department said Aaron went to the Voeglin Avenue address because his nephew, Joshua Clark, has been shot and he was looking for the person.

“He further stated that he knows Helen Roper and her sons and that the accidentally shot the wrong house and he regrets what happened,” the affidavit given by Walker states.

Walker also told the court Aaron gave officers the weapon the 29-year-old said was used in the crime.

Sad.This should serve as a cautionary tale to my fellow black men--although from the looks of things it seems to be falling on deaf ears--commit murder you wind up warehoused in prison and fodder for the careers of DA's and judges to boot.

This is one very sad story. An innocent life was taken and a young man has also lost his life. People we have to stop and consider the choices that we are about to make and also consider the end result of our actions.

“He further stated that he knows Helen Roper and her sons and that the accidentally shot the wrong house and he regrets what happened,”

BS!!!! Now he regrets it!! Too bad, I hope he gets exactly what he deserves and that is life in prison!! You take a life...you give your life.

I agree, pari. I wonder if he would have regrets if he shot the "right" house?

Thank you leo71.....I'm assuming ya'll know I'm white by now....I could just turn my back, like most Whites in this town, because there was no one White involved & say "Oh Well" another Black man off the streets but I don't feel that way at all....it saddens me that a beautiful Black woman that had children to raise is Dead. I did not know Ms Roper but she surely didn't deserve this. To all of the Black people in this town please don't support this guy...this was no Good Guy...this was no MISTAKE! The only family that needs support are the Ropers & Maul's.......they are the real victim's here.

You're welcome--pari-- but I also agree with caramel. This is a very sad situation all the way around, the Roper's & Maul's--whom I happen to be related to-- have lost and this man's mother has lost as well.Crime is certainly not exclusive to black people, but black men commit a lot of it...we simply have to wake up and put a stop to this nonsense before we head down the way of extinction...either in prison or worse.

Thank God for you....I see TRUE pride in your race in your words...not the so-called racism some call pride. This is the kind of pride I wish all Blacks in this town had...Thank You again for your comment maybe...."sharon" will read what you have to say.

You do the crime...you you pay the time. The point is you got a gun and shot someone. You accidentally shot the wrong house? What is this..the show "Gunsmoke"? That makes you even more pitiful and sorry to shoot. You thugs out there shooting, robbing and stealing...you get everything you deserve. You are a menace to society and to Selma. Thugs don't believe in consequences. It should be an "Eye for an Eye".

This guy should pay for his actions. He could have shot any other innocent bystander. It really saddens me to see the black youth today act in this manner. Especially our men. Most today have no regard for anybody's life or for their own life. We as black men need to stand up and take resposibility for our actions. We should be more concerned about getting an education, going to work and raising a family than letting our pants sag or going down the street with loud rap music. We don't care what we say to each other in public. We frequently use the "n word" in front of whites or any other race. We should be ashamed to use that word amongst ourselves. I hope that our youth use Barack Obama as an example of how to conduct ourselves. Education is the key. I have two sons and a daughter and I refuse to let them grow up as thugs. Hopefully we as black people can get back on the right track.
