School of Discovery launches new school year

Published Tuesday, July 22, 2008

To the editor:

The School of Discovery Genesis Center will blast off the 2008 - 2009 academic year on Wednesday, August 6, 2008. The school wide goals for this year are for pupils to score above the annual measurable objectives in percentage of proficient students on both the reading (81%) and mathematics (56%) components of the Alabama Reading and Mathematics Test (ARMT), and for students to score above the fiftieth percentile on the Stanford Achievement Test 10 (SAT-10).

Many of school’s education professors have attended summer college graduate classes and workshops/conferences to obtain professional development and for personal growth. When teachers’ knowledge expands, their students reap handsome profits.

They did it again! The Selma City Board of Education has assigned a group of A+ educators and support personnel to guide instruction and to provide support services to pupils at the School of Discovery. The faculty and staff members for the 2008-2009 school year are Andrea Jean Gilmore Curtis, Rebecca Nichols, Barbara Jean Robinson, Demisha Stough, Lisa Baker, Ann S. Thomas, James Allen Bearden, Joy Hobson, Ivery Williams, Cynthia Perkins, Phyllis Parks, Beth Watters, Jacqueline Walker, Becky Blaylock, Brenda Jefferson, Erika Smitherman, Lillie Gray Watkins Terry, Kimberly Stewart, John Henry Hunter, Mary Helen Jackson (Jackie) Stokes, Cynthia Burnett, Geneva Moore, Paris Solomon, Stella Pettway, Wanda Harris-Martin, Jacqueline Lucy, Chandra Toney, Ronald Lane, and Tihonia Hinton.

We are optimistic of a highly productive school year.

Gerald Shirley

Principal

Mr. Shirley, You, sir, are a CLASS ACT! Selma City should clone you. You could show many principals how to "grow good teachers"! No wonder your students, teachers and parents are happy!!

Mr. Shirley is Selma's "Joe Clark". Yes, I agree we should clone him. Mr. Shirley has been an asset to our school system they need to look at more resumes' like the one he holds.

Mrs. Ann Thomas was my most favorite teacher ever. She taught me in 6th grade at Edgewood, the only year I ever felt challenged and truly enjoyed school. Wonderful lady. So glad to hear she is still teaching.
