VALLEY GRANDE — A council seat is now vacant.
Councilman Donald Chandler announced he is stepping down after more than 3 years at a specially called city council meeting Tuesday evening.
Chandler is not only leaving the council; he is leaving the area. He is leaving his job at Zeigler, after seven years, to take a position at Hubbell Power Systems in Birmingham.
Regular city elections are set for Aug. 26.
At the March 3 meeting, council members will each bring a name of a person to be considered to finish the term.
Alabama state law says the council has 60 days in which to fill the position. If it does not, the governor can appoint someone after the 60 days are up.
If the governor does not appoint someone within 90 days, the probate judge must call a special election to fill the vacancy.
Valley Grande is not divided into wards. Every council
member must run at-large in the town.
Valley Grande has a five-member council.
