The Selma Art Guild is opening its doors early Saturday to give holiday shoppers some extra time to snag up one of the many homemade items.

From glass to clay, paintings and more, the guild has plenty of options for everyone during their holiday party.

“We are extending [our hours] for this holiday party and to thank our customers and to also have a chance for small sales,” said Karen Weir, co-president of the Guild. “We have some very personal things like letters that Jo Pate made that could be ‘G for Granny’ or it could be the letter of the first name. We also have beautiful pottery by Jo Taylor.”

Weir said for the gardeners, she has some paintings that have to do with the 30 paintings in 30 days that she did in September.

Weir said around 12 artists will be participating in the holiday party selling their smaller items to those seeking Christmas gifts, or a little something for themselves.

“There’s lots of small, nice presents that are handmade,” Weir said. “What’s fun is that we get to see some new things. Some of us as artists haven’t seen some of our fellow artists, plus it gives us a chance to show some things that we’ve done that the public hasn’t seen.”

Weir said the guild is an important part of the community in providing local artists the opportunity to show and sell their work along with the community coming out to see it all.

“We are primarily the artists in town, so we are promoting local art by local artists,” Weir said. “We also have workshops for people to learn how to do art and have a chance to expose them to this nice gallery. People can become artists and display here.”

For those that didn’t have a chance to make it out to the last show at the guild, they will also be able to catch up during the holiday party.

“The Lost and Found show is still up, so those that haven’t been able to see it, they’ll see a juried show that we have every year,” Weir said. “So in addition to being able to shop for fun Christmas presents, you can also look and shop for something a little bit larger.”

Weir said she is hoping that people that may have never been before will venture out and see the gallery and what they have to offer.

“We have a hardcore following of people that always come, so we’re always delighted to see old friends, but we also now are branching out and have a lot of new people that didn’t even know we were here to do things,” Weir said.

The Art Guild will be participating in the third First Morning Art Walk and will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The monthly event began in October.

The guild will open again Friday, Dec. 9 and Saturday, Dec. 10 from 12-4 p.m.

The Selma Art Guild is located at 508 Selma Ave.
