A preliminary autopsy revealed a 21-year-old Selma man that died after wrestling a gun away from a police officer last week at headquarters shot and killed himself.

District Attorney Michael Jackson confirmed Thursday that 21-year-old Rykemp Giles died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Giles was also shot by an officer during the scuffle over the gun, but that injury was not fatal.

Selma Police Chief John Brock said the department had a feeling it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound that killed Giles, but had to wait on the autopsy results to confirm it.

“We knew that day what happened, but we couldn’t officially say that,” Brock said. “I’m just glad none of my personnel were injured seriously. It could have been a lot worse.”

The incident happened when Giles was being booked on the second floor for domestic violence charges from an incident involving his mother.

“After the officer did his paperwork, he was sent to the clerk to do the fingerprinting and the photographing. When he entered that room, he attacked the processing clerk. That’s when the officer heard what was going on,” Brock said. “He went in there and the gentlemen came out of that little room and attacked the officer when he was coming in, and the fight was on. They fought. He took control of the officer’s gun. Several shots were fired. Other officers came in. He retreated back into that back cell back there.”

Giles attacked the clerk and the officer he took the gun from with a box cutter. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The SPD Special Response Team found Giles dead in the back of a cell with the officer’s gun in his hand a few minutes later.

After the incident Brock said the department would review the booking procedure and determine if any changes need to be made.

“We’re reviewing our security plans up there, and we are going to make some changes,” Brock said.

Brock did not go into specifics on what changes would be made.

The clerk is still on administrative leave due to health issues, but the officer whose gun was taken has returned to duty. An officer that responded to the fight is still on leave.
