ArtsRevive and International Paper’s Riverdale Mill are teaming up to hold an art show at the Carneal Building featuring works with paper to celebrate the mill’s 50th anniversary.

“The Chamber of Commerce and ArtsRevive are having a reception for the artists and to honor International Paper for their 50th year in Selma,” said Martha Lockett, ArtsRevive executive director. “We’re calling it a Chamber Way After Hours because it’s on a Saturday night.”

The show opens Saturday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. with a reception, and remains open on the weekends in November. The show features photography, pen and pencil, ink, palate knife painting, watercolors and more.

Lockett said she was excited to get the call asking to partner with International Paper.

“We are really excited. IP came to us and wanted to do an art event and an art show. We were thrilled to be asked to be a part of it and really excited to be able to help bring International Paper back into the community,” Lockett said. “They want to get really involved in what’s happening in downtown renovation, and this is their first step.”

Lockett said having International Paper involved in the art community is good for Selma, and she is excited to see where the relationship will go beyond the show.

“IP has been a valued part of the community for years, and for them to reach out and want to do something in the arts for the whole community was really, really good. It was something we sure wanted to take advantage of,” Lockett said. “We would love for it to continue. We would love for International Paper to be so pleased that this is something they wanted to take on regularly.”

Lockett said the show is a good opportunity for people to come out and see different types of artwork and get to know some of the artists.

There will be 75 pieces of art judged and on display from 24 different artists.

Best of show will receive $500, first place $300, second $200 and third place will get $100.

“It brings a really diverse crowd through the doors at Carneal,” Lockett said of art shows. “It’s a grand opportunity for community building, a chance to meet people and get to know people and it supports and validates the work of these artists.”
