Nightclub cameras should help customers feel safer

Last year, the Selma City Council passed an ordinance requiring nightclub owners within the city of the Selma to install security cameras by Feb. 1.

That deadline is now less than a week away, meaning any of the club’s without cameras will have to move swiftly to meet the deadline.

Although placing cameras outside the clubs won’t end all crime or wrongdoing, they will at least provide law enforcement with another way to track down criminals if an incident is to occur.

Over the last few years, there have been several unsolved homicides in the Selma area, including a couple near nightclubs.

It’s impossible to know whether security cameras would’ve recorded any footage that would’ve been helpful to police during those incidents, but they certainly wouldn’t have hurt anything.

City council president Corey Bowie said he doubted there’d be any problem for clubs to meet the deadline and we hope that’s the case.

Club owners should be encouraged by the ordinance because it should make their customers feel safer and that can’t be bad for business.
