Meadowview Christian needed to knock down 3-point shots to hang with Cahawba Christian. Every time his team needed him, Meadowview’s Kaymon McGuire came through.

McGuire’s six 3-pointers as part of his 24-point night led the Meadowview Christian Trojans (10-6) past the Cahawba Christian Chargers 53-52 Tuesday at Meadowview. The Chargers had a chance at the buzzer to win the game, but the shot fell short and the Trojans escaped with a victory.

The Trojans fell behind 7-0 early to a Cahawba team that came out with plenty of energy.

“We’re so used to being in a rhythm and sometimes when the other team hustles it gets us out of our rhythm and it makes things tough on us,” said Meadowview head coach John Robert Morton.

Meadowview trailed 9-4 at the end of the first quarter, but Justin McGuire rattled off five straight points for the Trojans to cut the Chargers lead to 11-9. With 5:04 left in the second quarter, Sam Dabit hit a 3-pointer to give the Trojans their first lead of the game at 15-13.

Kaymon followed it up with his first 3-pointer of the game to push the lead to 18-13.

“When Kaymon and Sam put the basketball in the hoop from 3-point, we’re a completely different ball team,” Morton said.

Cahawba came back to take the lead right before halftime, and Meadowview trailed 26-22 at the midway point.

Kaymon knocked down three triples to put the Trojans on top 36-33. Justin followed with a dunk to extend the lead to 38-34.

“He’s a natural leaper,” Morton said of Justin. “He’s a natural athlete.”

Kaymon made another 3-point shot to push the Trojans’ lead to 45-40 in the fourth quarter, and Justin hit a 3-pointer to give Meadowview a 50-45 advantage with 4:17 on the clock.

Cahawba reduced the Meadowview lead to 50-49.

Kaymon answered the call once more by making his final 3-pointer of the game to give his team a four-point lead.

The Trojans made sure the ball stayed out of the hands of the playmakers on the opposing team for the final play of the game to preserve the win and move to 4-0 in the area.

“Exactly what I wanted to happen happened and we won a basketball game because of it,” Morton said.

The Meadowview Christian Trojans (10-7) scored 36 first-half points to give themselves enough of a cushion to handily defeat the Cahawba Christian Chargers 52-40 Tuesday at Meadowview. Tayler Roberts led the way with 19 points.

Christina Dabit scored 10 points in the first quarter, including two 3-pointers to give the Trojans an early lead. Dabit got injured in the second quarter, and Roberts played well in her absence, scoring 10 points of her own in the second quarter.

“Everybody stepped up and that’s what you’re supposed to do when somebody goes down,” said Meadowview coach Scott Gunter.

With 2:30 left in the third quarter, Hannah Thornton made a two-point shot to give the Trojans a 42-19 lead.

Mallory Freine put the Trojans ahead 46-23 with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter when she dribbled around the defense for a layup. Freine finished with 13 points.

Alyssa Verhoff scored twice in the fourth quarter the span of a minute to put the Trojans back ahead by 20 points.

“The last two or three games, we’ve been playing good basketball,” Gunter said. “We’ve started coming together and we’ve started playing as a team.”
