Just over a minute had ticked off the clock, and Meadowview already had four different players score. Meadowview didn’t have much trouble the rest of the way.

Jevar and Justin McGuire each outscored the other team in a Meadowview Trojans (6-4) 55-12 rout over Victory Baptist-Millbrook Tuesday at Meadowview. Jevar led the game with 16 points, Justin had 15 points and Kaymon McGuire added 11 points.

In a game in which the Trojans clearly outmatched their opponent, Meadowview head coach John Robert Morton was glad his team used the game to get better as a team.

“Sometimes you need some of these stepping stone games in order to get in shape and get together like you need in order to play big time games,” Morton said.

Jevar, Justin, Chris Maul and Kaymon each scored very early in the game as the Trojans scored the first 13 points. Late in the first quarter, Kaymon made two layups and a 3-pointer in the span of a minute.

Jevar made a layup at the end of the first quarter to extend a sizeable lead to 28-2.

Jeremy Lee came off the bench in the second quarter to knock down a 3-pointer, putting the Trojans ahead by 30 points. Jevar connected on two straight layups to close out the first half, and Meadowview led 37-4 at halftime.

The second half was never close, so Morton used the third and fourth quarters to give some of his other players playing time. He said the game was a good opportunity to provide more depth off the bench by giving some of the younger players more experience.

“Later on in the year, if someone does get in foul trouble, the person that we put in there has some experience so they’re not a deer in the headlights,” Morton said.

Victory Baptist-Millbrook 30, Meadowview 29 (Girls)

Meadowview limited Victory Baptist-Millbrook to just nine first-half points, but couldn’t hold off a comeback when one of the Trojans’ top players went down with an injury in the second half.

The Trojans (4-4) fell by one late free throw in a 30-29 loss to the Victory Baptist-Millbrook Eagles Tuesday at home. The Trojans held a 10-point halftime lead, but the game began to unravel in the second half.

Christina Dabit’s five first quarter points helped lift Meadowview to a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mallory Freine added two two-point shots in the second quarter to put the Trojans ahead 19-9 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Freine went down with an injury. She was carried off the court, and as she recovered with an ice pack on the sidelines, her team failed to recover without her.

“Mallory Freine is the leader of our team,” said Meadowview coach Scott Gunter.

“She’s our point guard and she does such a great job running offense. We’ve just got to hope that somebody steps up when she goes down.”

Hannah Thornton scored a two-point shot in the third quarter, but it was the only points Meadowview got in the quarter.

A 3-pointer by Victory’s Gabby White with 7:10 left in the fourth quarter tied the game at 21-21.

Dabit sunk a free throw to go up 22-21, but the Eagles came back to take a four-point lead with under two minutes to play.

Tayler Roberts hit two layups — one with 1:42 on the clock and one with just over 10 seconds remaining — to tie the game at 29-29. With the Eagles driving, Meadowview sent Victory to the foul line with three seconds left. The Eagles nailed one of two free throws and completed the comeback.

“We didn’t rebound well, we didn’t make shots. It just wasn’t our night tonight,” Gunter said.

Meadowview’s boys and girls teams will be off until after Christmas break.
