The Selma Art Guild is opening its doors Sunday to invite the community in to see the show “Movement.”

The show will open Sunday with a reception from 2-4 p.m. Artists will be present to answer questions and talk about their work.

“This is our second year that we’ve had a theme in November, and it’s been really popular just because it’s fun to see what people do with the theme, how they think about it,” said Sally Jordan, Guild president. “Last year’s theme was blue.”

This year’s theme of “movement” produced a wide range of work expressing how artists see movement. From paintings to sculptures and everything between, the show offers a wide variety of mediums too.

“I know that there’s a couple things going on Sunday afternoon, but I hope people will work this in their schedule because it’s two hours. They can come and talk to these people and get to know these artists,” Jordan said.

Jordan said she is excited about a new partnership with Judson College and was happy to have students enter the show.

They’ve got a good quality of art, unusual things,” Jordan said.

Two students placed in the show. Jewellyn David won second place overall for an abstract plaster sculpture, while Sam Queijsen received honorable mention with the work “Postal Feet” which featured a pair of Vans that were painted with envelopes and more.

Jordan said the students’ professor at Judson, Jamie Adams, has been involved with getting the students participating in the Art Guild.

“He decided to get his school involved in giving them their membership here, and he’s working into the curriculum to get them to participate and to work with us,” Jordan said.

Gery Anderson was the judge for the show, and Jordan said she was glad to have him participate.

“He has a degree in art history, and he’s very active in the Art Guild here, and with ArtsRevive,” Jordan said. “He’s well qualified.”

The overall winner of the juried show was Jeff Hughes and third place was Sandy Greene.

The show will open Sunday, Nov. 8 with a reception from 2-4 p.m. at the Art Guild, located at 508 Selma Avenue. It will remain open throughout the month on Fridays and Saturdays from 12-4 p.m.
