Brookwood (1-5) had trailed 16-0 after the third quarter but rallied to tie the game.

Eleven second half penalties put Selma (4-3) in a bad position, and Brookwood was able to take advantage and snagged three interceptions. Brookwood’s Brandon Johnson grabbed two of the interceptions, returning one of them for a touchdown with just over six minutes remaining. This was Johnson’s first game returning from a knee injury, but coach Panthers coach Tracy Dunn said he was not surprised to see Johnson making big plays.

“He always gives us great effort in whatever he does,” Dunn said.  “(He) stepped in there and made some big catches for us.”

Johnson also caught the Panthers’ lone offensive touchdown, but Johnson wasn’t the only Panthers playmaker to emerge in the second half. Wide receiver turned running back Larson Grant suddenly found himself filling in at quarterback when starter Eli Wilson got injured.

Grant completed 5-of-9 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. He also scrambled for nine yards and finished the night with over 100 yards of total offense.

“He gave us a spark tonight and he did a really good job,” Dunn said. “(We) just want to put him in a position to have the ball in his hands.”

Brookwood falls to 1-5 and will travel to Paul Bryant next week. Selma is now 4-3 this season and will travel to Bessemer City next week.
