A Selma man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly raping a teenager and possibly fathering her child.

Accord-ing to a press release from Lt. Curtis Muhannad with the Selma Police Department, 36-year-old Richard James Jones was charged with second-degree rape.

Jones’ arrest stems from a Sept. 24 investigation into a harassment complaint made by the now 16-year-old girl and her mother.

“When officers arrived at the scene they spoke with a 16-year-old female victim and her mother concerning the allegations,” Muhannad said in the release. “Through the officers’ interviews with the mother and daughter, they learned that Mr. Richard James Jones had possibly fathered the 8-month-old child of the daughter.”

According to Muhannad, there was an altercation between the girl and Jones about him being the child’s father. Jones allegedly denied being the father and attempted to assault her.

The Selma Police Department’s Special Victims Unit interviewed the teen and her mother on Sept. 30 about the 8-month-old child and rape allegations.

“The Special Victims Unit made contact with Mr. Jones and requested an interview with him concerning the allegations,” Muhannad said in the release. “During the interview, detectives determined there was enough probable cause to arrest Mr. Richard James Jones for rape second degree — engaging in sexual intercourse with a member of the opposite sex less than 16-years-old and more than 12-years-old.”

Jones was then booked, processed and transported to the Dallas County Jail where he is being held on $30,000 bond. Second-degree rape is a class B felony and is punishable from two to 20 years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines.

According to the investigation, Jones’ relationship with the 16-year-old girl is believed to have spanned over the last two years.
