The vaunted Selma defense finally ran into an offense it couldn’t slow down Friday night against No. 5 McAdory.

After holding its last three opponents to an average of 14.6 points per game, Selma (2-3) allowed 465 yards in a 40-7 loss to the Yellow Jackets (4-0). Shaquil Terry ran for 149 yards on only nine carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the way for McAdory.

“McAdory did some things tonight that kind of exposed us in some ways, and my hat goes off to them,” said Selma head coach Leroy Miles. “They’re a good football team.”

After the teams traded three-and-outs, McAdory drove the ball 64 yards for the first score of the night. Running back Shaquil Terry capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Yellow Jackets up 7-0.

McAdory also marched down the field on its next two possessions. Quarterback Zacharih Lovelady ran 22 yards for a touchdown with 2:38 left in the opening quarter to put his team up 13-0. The extra point attempt failed after a botched snap.

Terry scored his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run at the 10:43 mark of the second quarter to make it 20-0 McAdory.

“We had a good mixture of explosive plays and some drives where we had to put 8-10 plays together,” said McAdory head coach David Powell. “We just played hard and physical and had a good first half.”

Selma had negative offensive yards in the first quarter, but started to find a rhythm on its first drive of the second period. Quarterback Marquell Moorer connected with Lekedrich Rogers for an 11-yard pass and also ran for 11 yards on the drive to move the Saints into scoring range.

Freshman Allen King finished it off with a 15-yard touchdown run to pull the Saints within 20-7 with 7:40 left in the first half.

Unfortunately for the Saints, it was their only real drive of the night. Selma finished the game with 122 yards of total offense and 41 of those came on a pass with just over a minute to play.

“Getting kids to play every play is our challenge,” Miles said. “You can’t take plays off at this level of football and think that you can compete with a team of this caliber.”

It took McAdory only four plays to march down the field with an answer to Selma’s touchdown. Lovelady threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Willie Langham to make the score 27-7 Yellow Jackets with 5:56 left in the second quarter.

McAdory almost added another score before the half as the Yellow Jackets moved inside the Selma 5-yard line, but a poor snap forced a fumble and the Saints recovered.

However, even the turnover couldn’t slow McAdory’s momentum.

The Yellow Jackets scored on their first two plays of the second half. Terry took a handoff 64 yards on the first play of the third quarter for a score. Lovelady threw a 20-yard touchdown to Dakota Chapman with 10:26 left in the third quarter to cap the scoring.

Neither team scored in the game’s remaining 22 minutes as backups played for each side.

Selma’s Kordez Ervin played quarterback most of the second half for the Saints and connected with Pautavious Curtis on a 41-yard pass late in the fourth quarter. Ervin’s pass was the longest play of the night for Selma.

The Saints will play Keith (1-3) next week at Memorial Stadium.
