Parent is concerned about city school system

Dear editor,

I am a proud parent of three kids in the Selma City School System in grades tenth, eighth and fourth grade. I make it a practice to ask my kids daily about their school day, and the comments that I have been getting have been alarming. I have been trying to follow-up with the school principals and appointment to talk with Central Office personnel.

My son spent the first two weeks of school with no schedule at R.B. Hudson, and then when I questioned the administrators they stated that the students were given dummy schedules.

This is confusing for the students to keep changing schedules and teachers. As of Aug. 25, my son is now on his fifth schedule. The School Board has hired these people and it appears that they do not know what they are doing and no one is trying to correct the situation.

As a parent, we trust school officials to make the right decision for our kids, but when the school officials stop having our children’s best interest then it’s time for me as a parent to make a better decision for my kids.

My children come home and tell me that they no longer want to attend their schools and that is a problem.

Parents please talk with your children, follow up on their concerns.

As a parent we have a voice to make a difference in these schools but if we don’t know what’s going on then we can’t make things better for our kids. The superintendent Angela Mangum is not visible in these schools, neither is she available for parents to speak with. A system that does not care for me as a parent does not care for my children. Thank God for the available of private schools and the Dallas County County School System. My children and I miss Mr. Pope and Dr. Shanks who were both visible and available to take any concern that I had about my children.

I challenge the school board members whom we as the community voted in to inquire about these alarming issues that are going on in your school system. Parents are withdrawing their children daily from being a part of the confusion that Angela Mangum and current school principals are obviously ignoring.
