For many people in Selma and the Southeast, G Mommas Cookies are a go-to treat to satisfy the craving of something sweet, or really just to eat at any time and anywhere.

But soon, many more people might be enjoying the famous cookies.

Through the Small Business Big Game competition, Intuit QuickBooks is offering G Mommas Cookies founder Robert Armstrong an opportunity of a lifetime — to be featured in a 2015 Super Bowl commercial.

“It would be huge [to win]. One of the biggest hurdles I’ve had outside of Alabama and the Southeast, is just brand awareness,” Armstrong said. “So if I got that commercial, it would catapult not only my current stores, but it would also open up new doors into new retailers.”

Armstrong said he found out about the competition when he saw that a friend had shared information about the contest on Facebook, and after looking into it, decided that he wanted to apply.

To his surprise, after months of completing exercises and activities, including an online interview, Armstrong was notified that his business was selected as a top 10 finalist.

“I got a call maybe four weeks ago that said that I had made it through the first round and they wanted to do a video conference interview with me. So I did that about three weeks ago and I guess based off of that interview, they picked the top 10 finalists and they let me know … that I had gotten in the top 10,” Armstrong said. “I was ecstatic. I was going crazy.”

Armstrong said they had over 15,000 submissions to begin with, so making it to the top 10 is overwhelming in itself.

“For phase two, I was pretty excited, but I didn’t let myself get too excited,” Armstrong said. “Then when I got top 10, I was super pumped.”

Armstrong, a Selma native, said bringing attention to the Queen City is one of his main goals.

“I’m hoping that if I do get the commercial, that I’ll be able to feature Selma and stuff about Selma in the commercial. That’s what I’ve been trying push.”

But win or lose, Armstrong said he is still excited to have made it this far. On Nov. 1, Armstrong and the other nine finalists will be flown out to California to attend the Quickbooks Connect Conference, where they will find out who the overall winner is.

“It’s super excited and I can’t wait,” Armstrong said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to go out there and get to meet some of the people in one of the biggest entrepreneur areas in the world, and a really cool experience.”

With 30-second Super Bowl commercials costing between $4.4-4.5 million according to business insider, Armstrong knows this is his chance to land a free spot.

“I don’t think I would ever get a commercial if it wasn’t for the competition,” Armstrong said with a laugh.

The voting started Wednesday and will continue through Nov. 3. Votes can be cast once per day on the website www.smallbusinessbiggame.com/contests/sbbg.

“I’m up against some big city companies,” Armstrong said. “I’m going to need total support. I’m going to need everybody to vote once a day, everyday until Nov. 3.”
