Trojans run over Marion for first win

Meadowview Christian bounced back in a big way Friday night as the Trojans defeated Marion Academy 40-12 to win the school’s first game as a 6-man team.

After losing their first game in blowout fashion, the Trojans were hoping for a fast start against Marion. Instead, the Trojans gave up an 80-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff and then watched Marion recover an onside kick.

After a defensive stand put a stop to Marion’s momentum, Meadowview methodically took control of the game. The Trojans scored the game’s next five touchdowns by dominating the line of scrimmage.

“We just lined up and ran at them and fortunately it worked for us, and we were able to come out on top,” said Meadowview Christian head coach Lebo Jones.

Jevar McGuire, who sat out the first quarter due to a disciplinary issue, had 122 total yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the rally for Meadowview. Jones said he was the spark the Trojans needed offensively.

“He came back in the second quarter and played great,” Jones said. “He was the shot in the arm we needed when he came in during the second quarter. He helped turn things around for us.”

Chase Shipman added 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns and Chambers McGillberry had 41 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Trojans.

Meadowview led 19-6 at halftime and didn’t give up a second score until its backups were on the field in the fourth quarter.

However, the news wasn’t all good for the Trojans. Running back Zack Duke dislocated his ankle and will likely miss the rest of the year, Jones said.

“I hate him for him because he was one of our best players and a good kid, but he’s only a ninth grader so he’s got three more years to go,” Jones said. “He’ll bounce back.”

Meadowview will host Clay County next Friday in its first home game of the year.
