Derek Blevins cuts Bernard Winfield’s hair tuesday at Barbers and Billiards. The shop opened its doors to provide free haircuts and styles to children in the community.

Barbers and Billiards employees are making sure children go back to school with haircuts and high self-esteem. On Tuesday, barbers and stylists at the business offered free cuts and styles to children ages four to 12.

Stylist Kamiya Simpson said she and others at the shop want to help parents, especially single mothers out before school starts.

“Parents have been very emotional behind it because there are parents out there who actually don’t have the funds,” she said. “If we could even give back more, whether it be clothes or anything, we would do that. Right now, this is something small to start off with to help single parents. I want all single parents to know they’re not alone.”

Simpson said the shop will continue to offer free services Wednesday.

Like Simpson, stylist Terra Hatcher said she wants to give back to the community. She also said she wants children to feel comfortable and confident when they enter school in the next few days.

“I know how it is for some children who are less fortunate to go back to school,” Hatcher said.

Free hair styles and services will be offered at the shop, located at 2899B Citizens Pkwy, from 8 a.m.to 3 p.m. For more information, call 505-1300.
