A group of citizens continued its efforts to beautify Selma Saturday with its third get-together of the summer.

Keep It Clean Selma is a group that started earlier this year with a mission to not only clean up Selma’s streets but also to change the city’s attitudes.

They got back to work Saturday as 40 individuals participated in a clean up effort along Tremont Street, J.L. Chestnut Boulevard and surrounding areas. Project coordinator Amy Carmichael said the clean up day signified the group is building momentum.

“We definitely lost a lot of momentum on our last one,” she said. “It looks like this one is doing a lot better. We’re just trying to get the brand out there, and let people know what we’re doing.”

Everyone from children to families joined in on the beautification of the city. Volunteer Victor Shaw brought his wife and kids with him to take part in the process.

“We moved here a few years ago, and anything in town that needs help, we’re happy to help when it’s going to improve the area,” he said. “I’m showing them what it takes to make things better, and not to expect anyone else to do the work.”

The turnout of many people only added to the excitement for event organizer Bob Armstrong. He said he knows there are a lot of people in Selma who care about the community and want to make the city a better place.

“It’s hot. It’s 900 degrees outside,” Armstrong joked. “You know it’s hot, and to have people come out and be willing to give their time in a hot season like this means people case.”

Hopefully, more people will see what others are doing for the community, and follow suit, Carmichael said. She said Keep it Clean Selma can’t go on without volunteers as they are what drive the initiative. Although she was pleased with the amount of people who came out, she said she hopes even more people will lend a hand during the fall.

“I think the more people know what we’re doing, it’s going to keep getting better,” she said.

Keep it Clean Selma days are held every second Saturday of the month. The next cleanup day will be Aug. 8 at Houston Park Church of Christ on Crescent Hill Road at 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. For more information, call 267-9053.
