Winn Dixie gives back

The Southeastern Grocers’ associates, including Winn Dixie, had a special day Saturday in honor of the military men and women who have been severely wounded.

To go along with the Fourth of July, the branch of stores decided to donate 100 percent of profit made Saturday to the Wounded Warrior Project’s Independence Program.

The Wounded Warrior Project serves veterans and service members who incurred a physical or mental injury, illness or wound, co-incident to their military service on or after September 11, 2011, and their families.

We think it’s wonderful that the stores would put aside their own profit to give back to the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect out great country. It only seems fitting that they would do this on the day we celebrate our country’s independence.

Air Force veteran and store director of the Winn Dixie on Dallas Avenue Larry Crane said he was definitely in favor of what his store was doing.

“These guys that go out there and risk their lives so that we can have this freedom, … I think it is time that people stood up and took notice of them,” he said.

We agree, and we are proud to know that the people in Selma care enough to make Crane’s store No. 1 in its 10-store district and No. 5 in the entire region for giving money to the Wounded Warrior Project. We hope to see more store participate in the future in giving back to help soldiers.
