Edna Grace Johnson Smedley

Edna Grace Johnson Smedley, 85, of Statesville (Jones), died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Friday, June 26, 2015.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at the Ivy Creek United Methodist Church in Statesville with the Rev. Lance Eiland and Richard Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 30 from 5-7 p.m. at Ridout’s Prattville Chapel.

Mrs. Smedley was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Selma, to the late Carson Whitson Johnson and Eva Motley Johnson. She started her career as a switchboard operator at Southern Bell, worked in the lock plant for a time and then joined the International Paper Company (Hammermill Paper Company). She retired from I.P. after serving as the payroll clerk for 30 years. She was a member of the Ivy Creek United Methodist Church and active in her community. She served on numerous boards and committees in service to her community. She enjoyed crocheting, and many of her afghans grace the beds of friends and family members.

She volunteered and worked with various area hospice organizations and made afghans gifts for many the hospice patients. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Cecil Smedley Sr. in 2006.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James Cecil Jr. and Sandra Smedley of Statesville; daughter and son-in-law Sherrill Smedley and Vince Rutherford of Asheville, N.C.; brother, Dr. Marvin W. Johnson of Lake Butler, Fla.; brother, Milton Johnson of Statesville; sister, Mildred Combs of Montgomery; brother-in-law, Douglas Smedley of Autaugaville; three grandchildren, James C. “Trey” Smedley (Jennifer) III, Sean (Tiffanee) Smedley and Brandi (Josh) Prevatt; nine great-grandchildren, Cody and Caitlyn Prevatt, Alyssa, Seanah, Lisa, Parker, Bailee, Madison and Zachary James Smedley. Pallbearers will be Trey Smedley, Sean Smedley, Josh Prevatt, Willie Wilson, Mike Walker and Cody Prevatt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ivy Creek United Methodist Church Building Fund, 560 Autauga Co. Road 1 South, Selma, AL, 36703 in memory of Grace Johnson Smedley.
