Registration is underway for a new youth kickball league that will start its season in July.

The league is being organized by Venecia Eaton, the city’s new youth senior coordinator. Eaton said she had the idea for the kickball league well before she accepted the job and now is making it come to life.

“So many kids don’t play sports and some of them don’t like baseball,” Eaton said. “They prefer to do something else so I just decided ‘OK let’s do kickball.’ Baseball season ended so early so now they have something else to fall back on.”

Eaton said she’s going to sponsor a team and many city council members have already reached out to find out how they can sponsor a team as well. The league is free for players and is for ages 8-18.

Games will be played at the Selma High School softball field and will take place on Sunday afternoons around 4 p.m., Eaton said. The season will start in early July and run through October. Eaton said she’d like teams to have been 15 and 20 players so that vacations won’t affect teams.

“I’m trying to get them focused on doing something positive in the city and my other main focus is to keep them out of trouble,” Eaton said. “A lot of them won’t be involved in sports or activities at school, so they can at least say they are involved in something.”

The deadline to register is June 30. For more information, call Eaton at 874-2105.
