Selma Red of the 11-and-12-year-old boys’ league defeated Selma Blue 18-3 to claim the subdistrict title at the Dallas County Sportsplex Tuesday night.

“This season has been a disciplined season,” said Selma Red head coach Nathan Ellis. “I asked the guys at the beginning of the season to stay disciplined on the field. They played some of their better ball today. I’m looking forward to the next round.”

It was a dominating performance from the north subdistrict region champions. The game was called at the bottom of the third inning due to the 15-run mercy rule.

Selma Red did most of its work in the first inning as starting pitcher Osegia Aghedo sat down the first three batters he faced to get things going.

The victors were explosive at the plate also. Darrius Ellis got Selma Red on the board first stealing home after a wild pitch.

That started a chain reaction as Selma Red came out of the first inning with a 13-0 lead.

Tyreshon Freeman, Aghedo, Chris Gardner, George Turner, Derrick Edwards, D.J. Smiley, Cade Whitaker, Chambers McGilberry, Tristen Marshall and Ellis each scored a run or more in the first.

Selma Blue scored their only runs in the top of the third.

Mathew Free plated Nathan Johnson and Holt Utsey with a shot to the right field fence and Mathew King was walked in for Selma Blue’s third and final run of the ballgame.

“We had a great season overall, just couldn’t put the ball in play tonight,” said Selma Blue head coach Chris Nichols.

“They had pretty good pitching. Tonight, we just couldn’t get in a rhythm. That’s a good team right there. Hats off to them, and I hope they go all the way.”

Selma Red sealed the deal scoring five more runs in the bottom of the third.

Mathew Hand, McGilberry, Ellis and Freeman crossed homeplate and Gardner knocked in Aghedo for the final run to make it 18-3.

“From day one we practiced,” Ellis said. “That’s what all this is about. We go out and practice and do the things we are supposed to do.”

Regardless of the lopsided outcome in Tuesday’s championship game, both teams advanced to the district tournament, which will be at the Sportsplex Friday at 6:30 p.m.
