Red Cross helps fire victims

Last Friday, a fire destroyed the apartments of two families at the Les Chateaus Apartments on Medical Center Parkway. Fortunately, no one was killed or injured in the fire.

We should also be thankful that organizations like the Red Cross are available to help out in times like this. When some see the American Red Cross they might think of disasters such as hurricanes, or tornadoes, but there’s more to the organization than just helping out in major catastrophes. The volunteers at the local Red Cross in Selma are proof there are neighbors willing to drop everything and give their time to help others get back on their feet in a time of need.

The Red Cross put two families that lost everything into hotels and also completed case work while providing financial assistance for things they needed immediately. Once the basic needs of the families are met, the Red Cross will refer the families to long term recovery partners in the area to continue assisting them.

The volunteers at the Red Cross might not wear capes, but they help save or salvage the lives of those dealing with a disaster.

It’s always tough to deal with an unexpected twist or turn, or a big bump in the road like a fire, but thankfully organizations like the Red Cross are there to help. Luckily in time, objects can be replaced and hopefully for the families dealing with this crisis that will happen eventually.

For now, the important thing is getting back on their feet. The Red Cross is doing its part to make sure they get back on track as soon as possible.
