Mary Logan Kelley was named the 2015 Girl of the Year by Delta Kappa Gamma Tuesday night at the Larry Striplin Performing Arts Center.

After being voted most likely to succeed by fellow classmates, Mary Logan Kelley demonstrated Tuesday night that she is well on her way to proving them right.

Kelley, a senior at Morgan Academy, was selected as the 2015 Girl of the Year by Delta Kappa Gamma during a ceremony at the Larry Striplin Performing Arts Center.

“I was very shocked,” Kelley said. “It’s one of those moments where you know girls ahead of you and they’ve gotten it and you look at it when you’re little and just [think] ‘Man, I wish I could be that one day’ and just the thought of it actually happening is very humbling and I’m very blessed to get to this point.”

Kelley was one of 19 girls selected as a semifinalist for Tuesday’s ceremony.

“It’s an honor for all the girls that are nominated because they are always what are considered the three top girls from their school,” said Carolyn Dunaway, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and co-chairman of Girl of the Year.

“That means in scholarship, academies and community service. “It’s a big honor because this represents the best of Selma and Dallas County.”

Kelley’s mother, Allison said she was excited and happy to hear her daughters name called as the Girl of the Year.

“Initially I was just ecstatic,” Allison said. “I have watched her always be a self motivated, self driven child and she has a servants heart always, and it’s just been my prayer that God would grant the desire of her heart no matter what she chooses to do.”

After Mary Logan was announced as the winner, she gave a short speech and thanked those in her life that have helped her along the way.

“First of all I would like to thank my family for supporting me in everything I do. I would like to thank Morgan Academy for just pushing me through every opportunity to get to this point today,” Mary Logan said in her speech.

“I would like to thank Delta Kappa Gama for just putting this program on and giving me the chance to be Girl of the Year. I would like also to thank Jesus Christ for giving me this opportunity.”

Growing up, Mary Logan said she has always looked up the girls that received the Girl of the Year honor and now she is excited to be a role model for the girl younger than her.

“I hope that I always show [younger girls] to strive for their best in everything they do and every opportunity even if it’s small,” Mary Logan said.

“I hope that I’m a great role model and they can always come to me for advice.”

Mary Logan plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall and major in accounting with a focus in actuarial science.
