Jameis Winston might’ve been the biggest name selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, but he was far from the only player with Alabama connections selected.

As expected, the former Hueytown High School star and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner was selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday during the first round of the draft from Chicago.

Over the following two days, Alabama had seven players selected and Auburn had five.

Heisman finalist Amari Cooper was first off the board after being picked fourth overall by the Oakland Raiders, giving Alabama head coach Nick Saban 17 first round selections during his time in Tuscaloosa. Crimson Tide safety Landon Collins surprisingly fell from the first round, but he was scooped up quickly Friday by the New York Giants as the first pick of day two of the draft.

T.J. Yeldon didn’t have to wait long either.

After a college career where he ran for 3,322 yards and scored 39 total touchdowns,.Yeldon was selected as the 36th overall pick Friday by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fullback Jalston Fowler and offense tackle Arie Kouandjio were taken in round four. Fowler joins the Tennessee Titans, while Kouandjio joined brother Cyrus in the NFL as a member of the Washington Redskins. Cyrus was drafted last year by the Buffalo Bills.

Alabama offensive tackle Austin Shepherd and linebacker Xzavier Dickson were drafted in round seven. Shepherd was picked by the Minnesota Vikings and Dickson went to the New England Patriots.

Auburn didn’t have a player picked in the first two rounds, but numerous Tigers were picked in rounds three through seven.

Wide receiver Sammie Coates was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in round three. Fresh off leading the SEC in rushing with a 1,608 yard season, Tigers running back Cameron Artis-Payne was selected by the Carolina Panthers in round six, where he will join former Auburn standout Cam Newton in the backfield.

Other Tigers selected were defensive tackle Angelo Blackson by the Titans, tight end C.J. Uzomah by the Cincinnati Bengals and defensive tackle Gabe Wright by the Detroit Lions.

As a whole, the SEC had 54 players selected, the most of any conference.

Other players from schools within the state selected were wide receiver J.J. Nelson and tight end Kennard Backman from the now extinct UAB football program. Nelson heads to the Arizona Cardinals, while Backman joins the Green Bay Packers.

Samford safety Jaquiski Tartt was picked in round two by the San Francisco 49ers — the highest pick in Bulldogs history.

Among the undrafted Alabama players were quarterback Blake Sims, wide receiver DeAndrew White, linebacker Trey DePriest and guard Leon Brown. Auburn center Reese Dismukes and quarterback Nick Marshall were also not selected. All are eligible to sign as free agents.
