Four members of the Dallas County High School Beta Club earned a ticket to a national competition in Nashville, Tenn.

On April 9, more than 1,800 students competed in the Alabama Beta Convention in Birmingham.

Dallas County High School students Alex Kuhn, Hannah Cole, Jordan Cruz and Alexis Walker all placed in different areas of the competition. The students will travel to Nashville for the National Beta Convention on June 29.

Dallas County High School Beta Club sponsor Amy Reeves said she is excited and proud of the group.

“I don’t think people here realize the caliber of schools we went up against,” she said.

Kuhn’s interest in science helped him place third in the Division I science portion of the competition. He said he’s just looking forward to his trip to Nashville.

“I think it would be fun to go to Nashville,” he said. “I’ve never been to Nashville before, and being there to compete and see all of the schools from all over the country would be cool.”

Spelling was Cole’s specialty, as she placed second in the Division II part of the competition. She missed one out of 50 words in the championship.

She said she was excited and knew she had done well but didn’t know if she would place.

“I told everyone in my family, and I was looking at my plaque like forever,” Cole said.

Dallas County Senior Jordan Cruz placed third in the poetry section. She submitted a poem about happiness. Cruz sometimes uses poems to express her feelings, she said. To help with the competition, she enlisted some help from those around her.

“I asked a bunch of people like teachers, family, and friends about when they hear the word happiness, what do they think,” she said.

Without the aid of a calculator, Walker went on to place third in the Division II math section. The junior said she doesn’t love math, but she is good at it.

“We’d really like to go to the nationals to compete,” she said. “I think it would be a great opportunity for all of us.”

The club needs the community’s support to attend the nationals. For more information or to help, contact Reeves at 366-2232.
