Three players and a coach will represent Dallas County in this summer’s Alabama High School Athletic Association North-South all-star basketball games.

Alvin Briggs, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association, announced Friday the 60 players who will take part in this year’s games. Among those making the cut were Keith’s Harriet Winchester and John Pettway and Southside’s Charles Price. Dallas County boys coach Willie Moore also was selected and will serve as the South boys team’s head coach.

The games will take place July 22 at 6 and 8 p.m. at the Dunn Oliver-Acadome in Montgomery.

It’s nothing new for Selma and Dallas County to have players in the AHSAA’s North-South game. Since 2011, twelve boys and girls from the county have participated in the game for rising seniors.

Keith athletic director Tommy Tisdale said that number shows the strength of basketball and other athletic programs in Dallas County.

“The talent [here] in my very humble opinion is second to none,” Tisdale said.

Tisdale estimated that a Keith player hadn’t been selected to the all-star game in 20 years. This year the Bears are one of only six schools in the state to have a boy and girl in the game. Outside of Cold Springs (2A) and Keith (1A), the other schools — Blount, Jeff Davis, Albertville, Lee-Huntsville — are 6A or 7A schools.

Winchester will be on the South girls squad after leading the Bears to the 1A state championship and being named a finalist for the Alabama Sports Writers Association 1A girls’ player of the year. Classmate John Pettway will be on the South boys’ team as well after averaging 24.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game this season.

“It says the world for our program but it also shows a tremendous deal about those two,” Tisdale said of the two Keith players. “They are excellent kids. Both come from great backgrounds, great parents and foundations. I’m extremely excited for both of them.”

Pettway will be teamed with Charles Price, the first player from Southside to make the game since Jeffery Mack in 2012. Price averaged 10 points and 12 rebounds per game last season for the Panthers.

“It gets him a little more exposure outside of the AAU circuit,” said Southside coach Cedric Brown. “The people around the state and in surrounding areas get a chance to see him on that stage.”

Price is the third Southside boys player to make the game in the last five years, which is the most of any Dallas County school over that span.

Price and Pettway will be coached by Moore, whose selection makes it three straight years Dallas County has had some kind of representation in the all-star game. Hornets players William Lee and Jerrod Moorer were all-stars in 2013 and 2014.

“To be able to coach some of the top players in the state of Alabama … and to see where we are in the South as far as the strength of the talent we have — that’s more exciting for me than coaching the game,” Moore said.

The all-star game is part of the 19th annual AHSAA Summer Conference and AHSADCA All-Star Games Competition in Montgomery July 20-25.

Other all-star games that will be held during that week include soccer, baseball, volleyball and softball.

Other highlights of the conference include the sportsmanship luncheon that will honor all schools that have not had an ejection or fine during the 2014-15 school year and the championship coaches awards banquet that includes naming the 2014-15 making a difference award recipients, coaches of the year and the AHSADCA athletic director of the year.
