Young minds filled parts of Wallace Community College Selma Saturday for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math conference at the school.

Girls from third through eighth grade were eligible for the conference sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which encourages young women in STEM areas to promote growth in those fields in females.

One of purposes of the conference was to show girls that they have multiple career choices and that the fields of science and math are open to them.

We’re behind any program that encourages our youth to pursue education, particularly ones in fields constantly growing such as those represented in the STEM categories.

Our Dallas County and Selma School Systems are full of classrooms of children with bright futures. Many of those students are girls, who need to know that if they get a quality education and pursue a job in a STEM field that they can get a job.

Kudos to all of those who took part and helped organize Saturday’s conference.
