Cookoff, anniversary creates special day

It was a busy day in Selma Thursday, as there was no shortage of events to keep the whole family entertained.

The Alabama River Chili Cookoff took place on Water Avenue and as usual, it didn’t disappoint. From dancing cows and chili peppers, to a crowded street full of delicious chili, it was again a big success. The organizers from Leadership Class XVIII deserve a big pat on the back for another terrific year. All proceeds from the cookoff went to SABRA Sanctuary, a local shelter for domestic violence.

The 150th anniversary of the Battle of Selma was also observed with an official commemoration. Thursday was the exact date that the one day battle took place on April 2, 1865. Dozens came out for to recognize the anniversary.

We anticipate the re-enactment of the battle at the end of April and hope for weather as great as Thursday’s. Thanks to all who helped put on these events. The cookoff is the kind of treat we need more of because it brings the city together for fellowship and the anniversary of the battle reminds us of Selma’s history makes it so special. Having them in the same day made Thursday a great day.
