Selma’s Unity Quilt has a new home.

The patchwork quilt representing Selma’s history, people and places will be housed at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library.

The quilt was designed to be carried during the March 1 Unity Walk and was hung in Brown Chapel AME during the Bloody Sunday anniversary.

Mayor George Evans and those who worked on the quilt formally presented it to library staff on Tuesday.

Unity Walk organizer Juanda Maxwell said she’s grateful to find the quilt such an appropriate home.

“The library is a place of learning, and a place where you are able to better yourself,” Maxwell said. “That’s what we’re trying to do for Selma and the community.”

Selma-Dallas County Public Library director Becky Nichols believes there’s no better place for the quilt.

“The quilt is the story of all of us together,” Nichols said. “That’s what the library means. It’s the sum total of stories of every single person in the Selma-Dallas County area. We’re almost telling stories with quilts, and that’s awesome.”

In addition, Nichols said the quilt compliments another children put together 20 years ago when the library was built.

Another quilt organizer, Jamie Alvey, said she’s glad the quilt will be somewhere all can enjoy.

“I think the library is a great community location because it’s a place where all people can come,” Alvey said. “I’m here a lot with my daughter, and I’m sure she’d love to see it.”
