In a battle of teams ranked in the top five of the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll, No. 4 Morgan Academy got the best of No. 4 Autauga Academy in a two game doubleheader.

In game one, Margaret Mims pitched seven scoreless innings and had five strikeouts to lead the way in a 6-0 win. With the Senators up 3-0 in the sixth, Kendall Veach added three insurance runs on a bases clearing triple that looked like it might clear the fence.

“They did pitch to her, which surprised me, and I know that if you pitch to her enough times you are going to pay,” said Morgan head coach Ed Miller. “I couldn’t have had a better person up with the bases loaded.”

Veach’s hit was part of a solid hitting performance for Morgan. Lauren Criswell and Ansley Smitherman knocked in early runs to give Mims a lead to work with.

“It makes you feel really good that if she’s on and most of the time she is, if we score two or three runs then we are going to win,” Miller said of Mims.

Jeni Redd tacked on one more run in the sixth before Veach’s triple.

The Senators also won the second matchup 7-5.
