The Alabama Sports Writers Association announced the finalists for basketball players of the year Wednesday and two players from Dallas County made the cut.

Keith’s Harriet Winchester, who led the Bears to the 1A state championship, joins Brantley’s Amanhi Upshaw and Spring Garden’s Tykeah Rogers as finalists for 1A player of the year.

Winchester’s accolades are the newest for a Bears’ team getting a lot of recognition from the ASWA. Keith head coach Cecil Williams was named the 1A girls coach of the year Tuesday and Winchester’s teammate, Zykia Pettway, was named third team all-state.

“She’s around a talented group of girls, but she’s talented herself, too,” Williams said. “Harriet is a standout player who has room to grow with great potential. I’m proud of her for what she’s been doing.”

Winchester averaged 18.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5 assists per game this year for the Lady Bears.

Dallas County High School’s Jerrod Moorer was also named a finalist for 5A boys player of the year. The Hornets have had a finalist for player of the year three consecutive years.

“I think it means a lot for Jerrod,” said Dallas County head coach Willie Moore. “I’m so happy for him and his grandparents and his family because he has worked so hard over the course of four years. I’m just ecstatic for him that his talent has been noticed by some of the sports’ writers in the state of Alabama.”

Moorer averaged 26.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and led Dallas County to its second consecutive appearance in Birmingham this season. He currently has offers from Auburn University Montgomery, Texas Southern and Montevallo among others.

The other finalists in 5A are Faith Academy’s Josh Hill and J.O. Johnson’s John Petty.

Dallas County’s William Lee, currently starring for UAB, won the 2013 and 2014 class 4A Player of the Year Awards as well as Mr. Basketball last season. If Moorer wins, he’d continue a remarkable run of award winners for the Hornets.

“It says a lot about the kids we have,” Moore said. “I couldn’t have picked better kids than the ones we have that have represented our school and our community. I’m speechless because I know how hard those guys have worked.”

The awards will be announced at an awards banquet April 2 in Montgomery.
