Michael Johnson will have a homecoming of sorts in 2015.

ESPN reported Sunday that the Selma native signed a four-year contract to rejoin the Cincinnati Bengals, the team he spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with. Johnson joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a five year, $43.8 million contract last offseason but was cut earlier this month after a down season statistically.

Battling through injuries, the defensive end finished the 2014 season with 27 tackles and four sacks.

He has 30.5 career sacks including 11.5 in 2012, which is the fifth best total for a single season in Bengals history. He also has three career interceptions, all of which came in Cincinnati.

The Bengals are hoping Johnson can revitalize a pass rush that ranked last in the NFL last season with only 20 sacks. Cincinnati was one of the best teams at getting to the quarterback much of Johnson’s time there.

In 2013, Cincinnati ranked 10th in the league in sacks. The Bengals were even better in the previous two years when they ranked fifth and third.

Johnson also made a visit to the Minnesota Vikings before opting to return to Cincinnati.
