Selma’s postal service is now offering people a chance to capture and keep a piece of the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights March.

Commemorative caches will be sold at the office for $5. The caches feature a blend of images, including Alabama’s State Capitol Building, the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holding hands with other Civil Rights leaders.

Commemorative stamps with an image of the March on Washington are also available for $9.80.

Clerk at the Selma post office Valerie Ridgeway-Walters said people should purchase a cache because it serves as a reminder to what happened in Selma and the nation 50 years ago.

She said it was amazing to see people unite then and pointed out the fact the cache was united in the way monuments and images were turned into a collage.

“I think it’s such a great memory of what took place when people united together, not just for blacks, but for everybody,” she said.

The excitement surrounding the cache showed upon Walters’ face, as she mentioned she was going to buy one for her grandchildren, who came from Maryland to attend the Bridge Crossing Jubilee.

The caches are purposely placed at the front of the clerks’ desk at the post office, so customers will be able to notice them. In fact, some might have already gotten word of the caches, since the postal service was selling them at the Bridge Crossing Jubilee. Order forms are readily available on the United States Postal Service website.

She said people might want to hurry and purchase a cache, because folks from across the United States have contacted her to buy a piece of history. She said a person from New Orleans called her and ordered 10 caches.

“It’s a great thing to look back on and have as a memory of what we been through and where we are now,” Walter said. “This will be something great for people to collect, and to see what great things have happened here in Selma and the march to Montgomery.
