The Meadowview Christian softball team didn’t look like a squad that hadn’t practiced a lot lately Friday in a 11-2 victory over Tuscaloosa Christian.

Claudia Kendrick threw strikes, the Trojans’ defense turned routine plays into easy outs and Meadowview (2-0) showed no rust at the plate, despite not being able to practice on the field because of storms over the last three weeks.

“We’ve been in the gym most of the time so it is nice to get on the field and have a pretty day,” said Meadowview coach Cherie Grimes.

The Trojans broke the game open with a big third inning. Christina Dabit singled to score Maggie Tipton and minutes later a Kendrick single tacked on two more runs. By the time the inning was over, Meadowview had upped its advantage to 9-1.

“[Our] hitting has been better,” Grimes said. “They have been improving each day with their hitting.”

Tuscaloosa added a run in the fourth, but didn’t seriously threaten again until the top of the fifth. The Warriors had runners on first and second with no outs, but Tipton, who plays catcher for Meadowview, made two tremendous plays in a row. On back-to-back plays she threw out Tuscaloosa runners attempting to steal third, which put an end to any scoring threat.

Kendrick had all the cushion she needed early on in the game and outside of a couple of ground balls that slowly dribbled to her feet, she gave up little.

“I even had the umpire mention how great she was doing,” Grimes said. “She’s got the speed.”

Despite the lopsided score, the game went all seven innings. Tuscaloosa held Meadowview scoreless in the sixth and seventh but the Warriors couldn’t manage any kind of rally.

It was Tuscaloosa’s first game of the year.

Meadowview will play Victory Christian on the road Saturday at 12 p.m.
