Final rankings: Four local teams make top 10

It should come as no surprise that the four local teams that cracked the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s final basketball rankings of the year are also hosting area tournaments next week.

Of the local teams ranked, only the Keith boys (15-11) fell in the rankings, but even they didn’t fall far. The Bears fell one spot to No. 2 in the class 1A rankings after a loss at Sunshine last week. Not surprisingly, Sunshine reclaimed the top spot in 1A after the win over the Bears. Barring an upset, those teams could play for a third time next week in the area 5 tournament in Orrville. Keith won a coin flip to host the tournament on Wednesday. The Bears will host Akron in the first round of the area 5 tournament Feb. 3 at 8:30 p.m.

The Keith girls (19-5) will also play Feb. 3 against Ellwood Christian in the class 1A, area 5 tournament. The Lady Bears have not lost since mid-December.

Back on the boys side, defending class 4A state champion Dallas County — now in 5A — rose to No. 4.

The Hornets clinched the class 5A, area 6 regular season title in a win over Sumter Central (19-8) Tuesday.

The Hornets will host Demopolis in Plantersville Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the class 5A, area 6 tournament.

The final team in the rankings from Dallas County is the Selma Lady Saints (18-5).

Selma will host Chilton County in the first round of the class 6A, area 6 tournament Feb. 4.

The Selma boys (16-8) were nominated for the 6A rankings but did not make the cut.

The No. 1 ranked boys teams are Restoration (AISA), Sunshine (1A), Cold Springs (2A), Holly Pond (3A), Cordova (4A), Faith-Mobile (5A), Lee-Huntsville (6A) and Lee-Montgomery (7A).

The No. 1 ranked girls teams are Glenwood (AISA), Brantley (1A), Samson (2A), Lauderdale County (3A), Deshler (4A), Wenonah (5A), Homewood (6A) and Huntsville (7A).
