Two men reportedly responsible for separate shootings in Selma waived their preliminary hearings to a Dallas County grand jury Tuesday.

Trials for attempted murder suspects Kirby Brown, 23, and Nathan Parker, 49, will continue. The cases are to be presented to the Dallas County grand jury in the next few months, according to District Attorney Michael Jackson.

“We’re glad that we can proceed forward with this, and bring closure to the victims,” Jackson said.

Jackson said the option on whether or not to hold a preliminary hearing was presented, and there are various reasons why an attorney would prefer their client skip the preliminary hearing.

“Sometimes it’s just to get the case to a grand jury and from there get it to circuit court, so both parties can go ahead and go forward with whatever is going to happen on the case,” Jackson said.

Parker, of Marion Junction, allegedly shot a Selma barber who was in his 40s Dec. 4, 2014, at the Selma Teamwork Barber Shop on 911 J.L. Chestnut Jr. Boulevard, Lt. Curtis Muhannad said with the Selma Police Department.

Parker, who was reportedly friends with the victim before the incident, shot him in the left leg, leaving the victim in critical condition, according to Selma officials.

There was reportedly an altercation prior to the shooting in which jokes about the victim’s family and Parker’s niece were made, Muhannad said in early December.

About 24 hours following the shooting, police arrested Parker on Dallas County Road 204 in Marion Junction during a traffic stop.

Brown, of Selma, allegedly shot a 27-year old male in the left side of his head on the 900 block of King Street, on Nov. 2, 2014, leaving him in stable condition.

The shooting is believed to stem from an ongoing dispute between Kirby and the victim, Muhannad said.

Brown was labeled a person of interest the day following the incident and turned himself into the Selma Police Department in late November 2014.
